Moscow authorities plan to increase the number of slow zones for electric scooters

The Moscow authorities are considering the possibility of increasing the number of slow zones, where the speed of movement on rented electric scooters is automatically reduced to 5–15 km/h. The relevant information is presented in the response of the city government to the appeal of Senator Artem Sheikin.

In the appeal, which was reviewed by RIA Novosti, Mr. Sheikin indicated that the speed limit for electric scooters on the sidewalks of Moscow should be limited to 10 km/h. He noted that the need for speed limits is evidenced by the many accidents caused by collisions between pedestrians and electric scooters.

“In order to improve the safety of the movement of electric scooters for rent, operators providing the relevant service are required to limit the speed of rental electric scooters to 25 km/h. Slow zones are also being introduced, in which the speed is automatically reduced to 5–15 km/h. As of August 2023, 200 slow zones have been introduced, ”says the response to the senator, signed by Moscow Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov.

At the end of July, the Ministry of Transport announced additional measures to regulate the movement of electric scooters and means of individual mobility. This, in particular, is about limiting the speed of overtaking pedestrians and tightening penalties for violators. In early August, Artem Sheikin informedthat the draft law prepared by him on fines for speeding will be submitted to the State Duma in the fall.
