Mortality in Russia decreased by 12.9% in January-June 2023

Russia again recorded an improvement in a number of demographic indicators: mortality in the country in the first half of 2023 decreased by 12.9% compared to the same period of the previous year. This was announced on Tuesday, August 22, by Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, who oversees the social sector.
As the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized, in this regard, Russia managed to return to the indicators recorded before the coronavirus pandemic.
Golikova noted that the birth rate indicators are modest – there is a decrease of 2.3% in the first half of 2023 to the first half of 2022. The politician explained this by the demographic declines of the 1990s.
Earlier, Rosstat noted that mortality in Russia in the first quarter of 2023 decreased by 21.4% compared to the same period in 2022 – from 584.6 thousand to 459.7 thousand people. At the same time, the natural decline in the population of Russia in the first quarter of 2023 decreased by 43.72%.
However, in some Russian regions the situation is not always positive. For example, in the first five months of 2023, the Penza region registered death of 21 infants under one year oldwhich is eight more deaths than the same period in 2022.
