More than 1 million people have received Russian citizenship in a simplified manner since 2019, said Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev. He presented these data at the government hour in the State Duma.
“Work on simplified admission to Russian citizenship for humanitarian purposes began in 2019, from the moment the relevant presidential decrees were issued. Over the past period … (citizenship received.— “b”) more than 1 million people,” the minister said (TASS quote).
The first version of the presidential decree on the simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship appeared in April 2019 and applied only to residents of the then unrecognized DPR and LPR. By the end of January 2022, more than 720 thousand residents of these two republics got Russian citizenship. In May, Vladimir Putin simplified admission to citizenship for residents of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of Ukraine, who, together with the DPR and LPR, were admitted to the Russian Federation on September 30. On July 11, the decree was extended to all residents of Ukraine.
