More than 100 athletes from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, including the taekwondo department of the municipal sports school of the Olympic reserve for Greco-Roman wrestling, are taking part in the Olympic taekwondo championship on November 26. The fights take place on two stages using an electronic judging system, electronic vests and helmets. This was reported by the press service of the city district administration.
Athletes perform in various categories: from juniors to young men. Both boys and girls take to the courts today.
Before the start of the competition, those present were greeted by Vice-Mayor Dmitry Khaibriev on behalf of the mayor of the regional center.
“Taekwondo is rightfully one of the most dynamically developing sports. And today, thanks to this sport, our municipal sports school has the status of an Olympic reserve school. The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk team sets an example for others how to fight and go to victory. And it’s symbolic that the competition is held on Mother’s Day! After all, our mothers always rejoice at our victories and support us if we lose. Good luck to all athletes!” – he said.
The chief judge of the competition, Denis Kim, noted the contribution of the government of the Sakhalin region and the administration of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk to the development of sports
“Today sport in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is developing at a dynamic pace. Athletes often travel outside the region to demonstrate their acquired skills. Taekwondo has been a basic sport for more than 8 years. There are four students from our department on the lists of the Russian national Taekwondo team in different age categories,” he shared.
One of the first athletes to win on court today was Maxim Tsoi. The young man is a member of the Sakhalin taekwondo team. A student at a municipal sports school trains for 10 years:
“I followed in the footsteps of my older brother into this sport. I started achieving good results three years ago. There are more than 20 medals in the collection, more for first and second places. To succeed in Taekwondo, you need to train hard and be disciplined. My victories are largely the merit of coach Denis Kim,” said the athlete.
At the end of the competition, an awards ceremony will take place.
