The memorial bust to Yuri Gagarin, which was solemnly opened by the Russian Embassy in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, will become a symbolic place for young spouses.
According to the rector of the University of Kinshasa, the newlyweds will come to the bust of the Soviet cosmonaut after painting for a wedding photo shoot. He hopes that this will become not only an internal tradition of the University, but also a tradition among all residents of the African capital.
In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Alexei Sentebov noted the importance of implementing this initiative, reminiscent of the great feat of Soviet scientists and the cosmonaut, to strengthen friendship between the peoples of the two countries on the eve of the July Russia-Africa summit.
The bronze bust of the first person to fly around the Earth, made according to the sketch of the sculptor A. Leonov, was donated to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Congolese University by the International Charitable Foundation “Dialogue of Cultures – One World”.
The University of Kinshasa is the largest institution of higher education in Central Africa. It is a “city within a city”, a campus that is home to several thousand people – employees, students and their families.
