A monument to the ex-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Vladimir Evgenievich Fortov, was unveiled on Wednesday at the Novodevichy Cemetery.

One of the most successful Russian scientists died in November 2020, two months before his 75th birthday.

He has more than 500 scientific papers and 30 monographs on the topics of pulsed and industrial energy, space physics, and controlled thermonuclear fusion. It was he who created protection for the Soviet automatic interplanetary station “Vega”, which in 1984-86 explored the atmosphere of Venus and Halley’s comet.

He became President of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013, uttering memorable words: “We need to make sure that the working scientist becomes the central figure in our Academy of Sciences, so that all components of the scientific infrastructure are focused on his needs, revolve around him, like planets around Sun.” Unfortunately, everything turned out differently: after the reform of the Russian Academy of Sciences that broke out in the same year, the “working scientist,” according to Fortov, was torn off from the academy, subordinated to a “successful manager,” forcing him to work mainly not for the result, but for the sake of a senseless race for publications in prestigious Western journals. He held the blow along with the entire academy, but the daily desperate struggle with windmills sapped his strength.

On the opening day of the monument, his colleagues, friends and relatives came to honor the memory of the scientist. Among them: President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov, academicians Mikhail Marov, Radiy Ilkaev, Lev Zeleny, Alexander Sergeev, Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanov. The opening ceremony of the monument was also attended by the head of the FMBA Veronika Skvortsova and others.

The composition of the monument includes a figurine of Vladimir Evgenievich’s favorite cat, Boris, whom he loved very much.
