Modi expresses support for Putin after attempted armed rebellion

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the conversation was initiated by the Indian side, reported Kremlin press office. They discussed the situation around the attempt to organize an armed rebellion, Ukraine, bilateral cooperation, etc.

“In connection with the events of June 24, Narendra Modi expressed understanding and support for the decisive actions of the Russian leadership to protect law and order, ensure stability in the country and the security of its citizens,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

When discussing issues of bilateral cooperation, the importance of further implementation of major joint projects in various fields was noted. “We noted with satisfaction a significant increase in trade in 2022 and in the first quarter of this year,” the Kremlin added.

During the conversation, attention was paid to the interaction between the two countries through the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the G20 (G20), as well as in the BRICS format. At the same time, the Indian prime minister briefed Putin on his international contacts, including during his recent visit to Washington.

In addition, the conversation touched upon the situation around Ukraine. Putin assessed the current state of affairs in the special operation zone, “emphasizing Kyiv’s categorical refusal to take political and diplomatic steps to resolve the conflict.”

“The conversation was meaningful and constructive. The leaders reaffirmed their mutual intention to strengthen the especially privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India and agreed on further contacts,” the Kremlin concluded.

On the evening of June 24, after negotiations with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, Yevgeny Prigozhin decided to stop the movement to Moscow and return the fighters to the rear camps of the Wagner PMC. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov explained that as a result of the negotiations, an agreement was reached: the criminal case initiated against Prigozhin would be terminated, and he himself “would go to Belarus.” On June 27, the FSB closed the case.

On June 27, President Putin said that the Russian military had “virtually stopped the civil war.” The head of state noted that units of the Ministry of Defense, the National Guard, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and special services during the events of June 24 ensured the reliable operation of “the most important control centers”, strategic facilities, as well as the security of border regions.
