Young scientists from NUST MISIS have developed a new composite material, which is likely to be able to replace imported materials used, among other things, in the construction of aircraft.
The material is a carbon fiber based on a polymer matrix. Its high strength, low weight, resistance to high temperatures, as well as resistance to corrosion will allow it to be used in such technological industries as rocket science, aviation, construction, and medicine. In particular, to create elements of the power set or aircraft hull structures. The use of a new composite material can reduce the weight of the aircraft model, reduce the amount of fuel it uses.
The surface of the carbon fiber, the researchers processed the method of thermal oxidation. After that, a thin layer was formed on the surface of the carbon filaments, which made it possible to achieve better adhesion of the carbon fiber to the polymer matrix.
According to Andrey Stepashkin, one of the authors of the study, senior researcher at the Center for Composite Materials at NUST MISIS, when speaking about the possibilities of using a material, it is necessary to evaluate on which particular product they will be used.
– This affects the working conditions in the structure, the requirements for strength, the maximum allowable deformations. Accordingly, the reinforcement scheme changes, and the degree of filling (fiber content) will also be different,” Andrey Stepashkin explained.
