Sergei Mironov, head of the Just Russia – For Truth faction, said that he had approached Russian President Vladimir Putin with the initiative to withdraw the border troops from the FSB. Thus, the deputy proposes to strengthen the protection of border regions. He expressed the hope that “certain decisions” will be made in the near future.
“In 2003, when the border troops were liquidated and transferred to the FSB, then there were only conditions, today it is absolutely clear that troops with all the attributes, including aviation, artillery and armored vehicles, are needed to protect our borders,” Mr. Mironov told reporters. (quote from TASS).
In 1993, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, by his decree, created the Federal Border Service of Russia (FPS) – the main command of the border troops. In 2003, President Vladimir Putin abolished the FPS, and transferred its functions to the Federal Security Service. In its structure, the border service of the FSB of Russia was created, one of the main tasks of which is the protection of the state border.
