The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology has agreed not to make Chinese a compulsory language after student scandals. The university said that “the development of a consolidated opinion with the student community has reached a dead end.”
“Phystech will return to the classical program of teaching foreign languages,” the university said in a statement.
They noted that they still consider Chinese a promising language for learning. Students who study it and want to continue doing so will have this opportunity. However, “in order not to get stuck in discussions” on the formats and volumes of teaching, it was decided to return to the usual program.
Previously reportedthat university students were required to study Chinese instead of German and French, which they had before. A petition “against the forced study of the Chinese language” appeared in the student council group of the university.
