Ministry of Health: Since 2009, Russians began to smoke three times less often

The prevalence of smoking in Russia is declining and now stands at about 21%, according to Ministry of Health. According to Rosstat and GATS, in 2009 the prevalence of smoking among Russians was 69%.
“The government and the Ministry of Health of Russia have been implementing a consistent policy aimed at reducing the prevalence of smoking (including electronic cigarettes) for many years,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
The agency urged not to believe the creators of the Statista service, who are “trying to convince someone otherwise.”
Statista is a German company that specializes in market and consumer data. According to her, in 2022, half of the respondents living in Russia said that they do not smoke. The highest percentage of smokers was recorded in 2016 – 57%. In recent years, the proportion of active smokers has increased, according to Statista. A fifth of residents reported smoking one pack of cigarettes a day (compared to 16% percent in 2019).
