Ministry of Health: Since 2008, alcohol consumption by Russians has fallen by 40%

Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko said that per capita alcohol consumption in the country decreased by 40% in 2021. Now the average Russian consumes nine liters of alcohol per year.
“Alcohol consumption in Russia has decreased by almost 43% from 2008 to 2021. If in 2008 the rate of alcohol consumption was 15.7 liters per capita per year, then in 2021 it is 9 liters. Morbidity and mortality rates associated with alcohol consumption have also decreased,” the minister said (TASS quote).
According to Rosstat, in 2021 the number of deaths from alcohol decreased by 6% compared to 2020. In 2019 at WHO reported on reducing alcohol consumption in Russia by 43% since 2003. Against the background, the life expectancy of Russians has reached a historical maximum: almost 68 years for men, 78 years for women.
In 2020, the chief freelance narcologist at the Ministry of Health said that a third of Russians are “quiet alcoholics.” According to WHO As of 2018, 3 million people die from alcohol every year. Most of them are men.
