3G networks in Russia are planned to be completely switched off by 2027. This was announced by Dmitry Tur, director of the department of state regulation of the telecom market of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation, referring to the plan of decisions of the State Commission on Radio Frequencies (SCRF), transmits TASS.
He said that the plan for the future use of radio-electronic equipment (RES) has already been approved, and a corresponding resolution has been submitted to the government. The Tour expects the document to be adopted by the end of the year.
“There are several milestones in the open part of it: 2025 – cessation of fixed wireless access [в интернет] in large cities, 2027 – shutdown of 3G networks,” he said at the Spectrum forum.
On the sidelines of the forum, Tur clarified that we are talking about completing the process of turning off 3G by this date.
In August 2023, Ministry of Digital Development submitted draft strategy for the development of the communications industry in Russia until 2035. According to the document, by 2030 in Russia they plan to complete the use of 3G technology and begin the development and trial operation of domestic equipment of 5G and 6G-Ready standards.
From 2031 to 2035 in all cities with a population of 100,000 or more people, they plan to deploy 5G networks on domestic equipment with the ability to create dedicated network segments for safe and reliable interaction between critical infrastructure facilities and security services. Also during this period, commercial operation of 6G networks will begin.
