The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, Alexander Kurenkov, during a government meeting with the participation of President Vladimir Putin, said that the area of natural fires in the country had tripled, exceeding the figures for 2022. Also, the department, according to him, has begun active preparations for the start of the flood season.
“Since the beginning of the year, more than 1,000 forest fires have been recorded on the territory of the Russian Federation on a total area of over 190,000 hectares. This year’s fire rates are already significantly higher than last year’s figures. With a comparable number of fires, their area has more than tripled,” the minister said during the meeting. The most difficult situation with forest fires is developing in Buryatia and the Jewish Autonomous Region, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations explained.
According to the minister, the Ministry of Emergency Situations conducted 13,000 surveys, detected and stopped about 6,000 uncontrolled fires.
The authorities of the Russian regions also start fighting natural fires. So, in Buryatia, Transbaikalia and the Tyumen region, a special regime for visiting forests has been introduced. The grass was already burning in Yekaterinburg. Authorities in a number of regions are urging citizens to report arsonists for a reward.
Also, Mr. Kurenkov said that in the Siberian and Northwestern Federal Districts, a “severe flood situation” is expected in the near future. At the same time, according to him, the Ministry of Emergency Situations is already actively preparing to help those affected by the floods. The head of the department specified that since the beginning of the flood in 2023, 390 residential and 39 country houses, more than 9,000 household plots and 490 transport infrastructure facilities have been flooded across the country.
