Military scientists have come up with a new way to save submariners

A transportable bell will help with this.

A new way to rescue sailors from an emergency submarine was developed by N.G. Kuznetsova, specialists from the Naval Academy named after Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union. The other day they received a patent of the Russian Federation for their invention.

One of the devices with which they plan to evacuate sailors from the bottom of the submarine is the so-called rescue bell. It was invented back in the 30s of the last century. This is a cylindrical chamber, which, using a winch or other similar device, is lowered onto a submarine and docked to its hatch. Then the operators of the bell open its lower hatch, the submariners in the boat open their hatch and go into the bell. In small groups (5-8 people) they rise to the surface. The problem with the device is that it descends from a surface vessel, which means that wind and waves on the water surface can interfere with its operation, which will move the vessel, preventing it from accurately “aiming” and docking the bell with the submarine. Not to mention the fact that you will have to aim more than once. There are other disadvantages of such a system, for example, if the boat lay on the bottom under the ice, then the ship with the bell will not be able to get close to it. Or if the depth at which the submarine is located is too great.

There is also a way to rescue crews with the help of autonomous deep-sea vehicles placed on rescue submarines (SPL). Wind and pitching under water are not terrible, but this method also has a drawback. This is the autonomy of rescue vehicles: they can break down at any moment, and the rescue operation will not be completed.

Russian scientists decided to combine the two developments by supplying rescue submarines with bells. Boats should have underwater lighting and surveillance to pinpoint the boat’s position, as well as thrusters to position themselves directly above it. In addition, the rescue boat must be equipped with four anchors to secure it to the rescue site. Having hovered over the emergency vessel, she lowers the bell, and the sailors who have suffered an accident, as if on an elevator, in groups move aboard the SPL.
