Two performances by Russian dancer Sergei Polunin canceled in Italy informs Arcimboldi Theatre.
According to representatives of the theater, the decision is connected with the flow of threats that Arcimboldi received due to the presence of Polunin on stage. Despite this, the theater is convinced that we are talking about political and moral responsibility.
Gianmario Longoni, head of the theatre, said that the cancellation of performances was agreed with the artists. The Director suggested that the situation today was not at all suitable to expect a positive response from submissions.
“Perhaps the atmosphere has changed forever,” Longoni concluded.
Recall that Sergei Polunin was supposed to perform on the Arcimboldi stage in a production of the ballet Rasputin on January 28 and 29, 2023.
On the eve of the leadership of the Milan theater warned of the possibility of cancellation due to threats of ballet shows with the participation of Polunin. Rasputin was announced in the program three years ago, but the performance was constantly postponed due to the pandemic and the dancer’s injury. The directorate of the theater issued a statement expressing the belief in freedom of expression and the apoliticality of art.
