The sequel to “The Three Musketeers” from French director Martin Bourboulon is being released in Russia. The second part, entitled “The Three Musketeers: Milady,” is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, but the plot deviates significantly from the original. Fearless D’Artagnan is trying to save his kidnapped beloved Constance, but he cannot count on the help of his friends; they are protecting France from the British invasion.
Therefore, the main character is forced to act together with the insidious Milady. The main roles in the film were played by Francois Civil, Vincent Cassel and Eva Green. The budget for the second part was €36 million. The creators produced a fairly strong and high-quality entertaining film that will find its audience, says film expert, deputy editor-in-chief of the Moscow News publication Daniil Rotshtein:
“In the case of Milady, we have something to compare with, because this is a continuation of the duology; the first part of The Three Musketeers and D’Artagnan was released in April last year and showed a small but confident success. “Milady”, judging by the projections, will start relatively modestly, but it will be the highest-grossing new release of the weekend. According to most forecasts, this week it will give way to only two Russian films that have been playing for the second or third week, these are “The Master and Margarita” and “The End of Glory”.
“The Three Musketeers: Milady” is a rather serious project for the manufacturer, a large pan-European film production. In 2023, D’Artagnan, in my opinion, was the most expensive film produced in France and one of the highest grossing. Moreover, two television spin-offs have already been announced for these two films, helped by a powerful cast: Vincent Cassel, Eva Green, and, in general, very high-quality direction.
It’s such a simple, unobtrusive, solid piece of entertainment, and it obviously works in a huge number of markets. In general, it’s great that it’s coming out here, because if you look at the weekend, it occupies its own specific niche in format and style.”
The world premiere of the second part took place on November 18 last year; to date, the film’s box office receipts barely exceed $20 million. In Russia, the film is unlikely to be a serious financial success, says independent film distribution analyst Sergei Lavrov: “The first part of D’Artagnan did not perform well for us.” very successful, so I don’t think the second one will raise a lot of money.
The fact is that this is a very specific French movie, and the first part collected most of the money in its homeland, France. According to forecasts, the box office in Russia will be 45-50 million rubles, I think it will be so. Moreover, the release of this film will not become any special event.”
Both parts of the duology were filmed in 2021 in France in real royal palaces and castles. The first film, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan, grossed $53 million worldwide against a budget of $38 million.
