Midfielder of the club of the Russian Premier League “Ural” 27-year-old Rai Vlut was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. On Monday, a court in the city of Haarlem found him guilty of a fatal accident, the Telegraaf reported. The football player is also deprived of a driver’s license for four years.

The fatal incident happened in November 2021. Vloot got behind the wheel after the party and drove with a friend from Amsterdam to Rotterdam (at that time he played for the Dutch “Heracles”). As a result, Vloot crashed into another car, which led to the death of a four-year-old child. As the investigation found out, Vlut was driving at a speed of 203 km / h (allowed – 130 km / h) and did not even try to slow down. The alcohol content in his blood was twice the legal limit of 0.5 ppm. After the incident, Heracles terminated the contract with Vlut, and he moved to Kazakhstan, where he played for Astana. Already from there, last summer, Vlut moved to Ural, for which he has currently played 17 matches and scored 5 goals.

It is still premature to say that Vloet will actually be placed in a correctional facility. For starters, he needs to at least return to the Netherlands. He also has the right to appeal. In Ural, where the player is now (two weeks ago he went to his homeland to participate in the process, but was not present at the announcement of the verdict), they assure that Vlut intends to appeal the verdict. Vloot can also apply for a stay of punishment. As Vlut’s lawyer Eric Thomas told Algemeen Dagblad, the law allows this if, for example, the convict is bound by a contract (Vlut’s agreement with Ural is valid until December 31, 2024) and the losses from its early termination will be excessive. “The prosecutor’s office has such a right, but it is not obliged to grant a deferral,” lawyer Thomas said.
