The voice assistant Cortana appeared in Windows in 2015, but failed to gain popularity. In March 2021 Microsoft stopped support for Cortana for mobile devices. In March 2023, the company introduced Copilot tool in Microsoft 365: It appeared as a chatbot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. In May, Microsoft announced that Copilot would reside in the Windows 11 sidebar to assist the user and perform a range of tasks for them.
