On October 11, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Pskov and Porkhov was appointed Metropolitan of Crimea. Instead, His Eminence Bishop Arseny of Yuryev will become the head of the Pskov Metropolis. Metropolitan Tikhon is now overseeing several projects in Crimea and new Russian regions: in particular, he was the author of the creation of the multimedia historical park “Russia – My History” in Melitopol and participated in the reconstruction of the Sevastopol complex “Tavrichesky Chersonesus”.
In 2013, the British newspaper Financial Times wrote that Tikhon Shevkunov is “Putin’s confessor.” He himself said in an interview in 2017 that on issues of Orthodoxy, Vladimir Putin “has the opportunity to consult with a considerable number of competent people – from His Holiness the Patriarch to ordinary priests and laity.”
