American meteorologists have proposed a six-point scale for assessing the power of hurricanes.
American scientists published a scientific article in which they proposed establishing an additional category for hurricanes that are too powerful for the five-point scale used.
Five categories on the Saffir–Simpson scale allow you to evaluate the power of a hurricane depending on the wind speed at the center of the vortex. In the first, weakest, it ranges from 33 meters per second, in the second – from 43, and in the fifth – from 70.
Scientists proposed to classify hurricanes with wind speeds of 80 meters per second into a new category that has not yet been used. In 9 years, 5 hurricanes were so powerful, and climatologists suggest that due to global warming their number will increase.
Scientists shared their proposal in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
