Meteor impacts were recorded on Mars, which formed craters hundreds of meters wide

Two NASA spacecraft on Mars – one on the surface and one in orbit – have recorded the largest meteor strikes and impact craters. Meteorites formed craters with a diameter of almost 500 feet (150 meters), scientists reported in the journal Science. The larger of the two impacts created boulder-sized blocks of ice, which could help researchers find ways that future astronauts can use Mars’ natural resources. The InSight lander measured the seismic shocks, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter took pictures of the resulting craters. An image of the craters “would already be huge,” but matching it to seismic ripples was a bonus, said Lilia Poselova of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego and co-author of the study.
