MEPhI scientists know how to classify molecules in the air

Young scientists and students of the MEPhI University have developed a unique method for detecting explosives in the air.
The researchers studied pairs of various nitro compounds using spectral methods. Their new technique makes it possible to ionize the molecules present in the air, classify them according to their mobility, and then detect nitro compounds impurities.
As noted by Vitaly Kostarev, one of the developers of the method, a researcher at the Department of Physics of Micro- and Nanosystems of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, scientists introduced impurities that stimulate ion formation (dopants) into the composition of the gas sample. This method makes it possible to detect RDX vapors in the air even in their very concentration.
“The results obtained will help to increase the sensitivity of detectors and make prototypes of ion mobility increment spectrometry systems more portable through the use of less powerful and more compact lasers,” said Vitaly Kostarev.
