MEPhI scientists have developed a digital data coding system

A unique coding system developed by specialists from the Nuclear University MEPhI allows you to encrypt images, video streams and digital data. As explained by the engineer of the Department of Laser Physics of the University Anna Shifrina, any computer file is, in fact, a collection of ones and zeros. After the file is visualized, i.e. represented by a spatial signal, the information is displayed on the screen as a set of dark and light dots.
– Light, passing through the screen, with the help of a lens system enters the second modulator, where it is converted into a holographic key. Thus, digital information consistently receives an optical “embodiment” and is already encoded in this form,” explains Anna Shifrina. – At the output of the system, we get images of shapeless spots, which are a coded visual representation of the original information. These spots can be photographed with a digital camera and then transmitted over a communication channel without fear that they will be intercepted by third parties along the way. Of course, the recipient in the computer must have a key to the cipher, with the help of which he can extract the original message from the transmitted image of shapeless spots by calculation.
Why is such a complex system needed? It is assumed that, firstly, in this case, the processing and encoding of information will be carried out at a speed of many tens of gigabits per second. Secondly, the system will have a very low cryptographic vulnerability, since it uses a key whose sizes are measured in many kilobytes.
By the way, scientists themselves say that the development was based on ideas put forward back in the 1990s – 2000s by several research groups in the world. In Russia, the first studies in this direction were carried out at MEPhI. It has become possible to truly implement such systems only now, when electronic and optical technologies, as well as computer technology, have reached a sufficient level of development.
