Molten wrist watch, which survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, were sold for $31,113 at auction in the United States. The Boston auction house through which the item was sold did not release the name of the buyer.
The hands of the clock found among the ruins after the bombing stopped at the moment of the explosion – at 8:15 am. According to the description, the rare watch was discovered by a British soldier who was delivering emergency supplies to Hiroshima. The clock, it is emphasized, can be seen as “marking the beginning of the nuclear age and foreshadowing what may be the decline of civilization.”
Meanwhile, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons objected to the sale of the watch, sending a letter demanding it be delisted over concerns that people could profit from an artifact that carries dire historical lessons.
