Medvedev: Ukraine’s rejection of NATO membership remains one of the goals of the special operation

Despite NATO’s promise to invite Ukraine into the alliance, the country may never be accepted into the bloc. Nevertheless, Kyiv’s refusal to join NATO remains one of the goals of the special operation. This statement was made by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, commenting on the results of the first day of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

“What does all this mean for us? Everything is obvious. The special military operation will continue with the same goals. One of them is the refusal of the Kyiv Nazi group from membership in NATO, which we insisted on from the very beginning (which is impossible). This means that this group will have to be liquidated (which is possible and necessary),” wrote he is in his Telegram channel.

Commenting on the decision of the NATO countries to expand military support for Kyiv, Medvedev called the West “completely crazy” and added that such a step was predictable. “Actually, it’s a dead end. World War III is getting closer,” he said.

Following the results of the first day of the NATO summit in Vilnius, the member countries of the alliance accepted a communiqué reaffirming the 2008 commitment that Ukraine should become a member of NATO. At the same time, the statement says that Kyiv will be able to receive an invitation only after reaching an agreement between the allies and “fulfilling the conditions.” The document does not indicate specific terms for inviting Ukraine to NATO and its membership in the alliance.

At the same time, in the communiqué highlightsthat NATO does not seek conflict with Russia and does not pose a threat to it. In Kyiv declaredthat are not surprised by this decision of the alliance.

Russia’s special operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin called the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, its goals. The Kremlin has repeatedly emphasized that preventing Ukraine from joining NATO is also one of the goals of the special operation.
