Russia will achieve peace in Ukraine on its own terms, as was the case with Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said.
“We have enough forces to solve all the tasks of a special military operation. As in August 2008, our enemies will be crushed, and Russia will achieve peace on its own terms. Victory will be ours!” – wrote he is in his Telegram channel.
Medvedev noted that the US and its allies “clearly lacked experience” in 2008. According to him, today the West is “again waging a criminal war by proxy.” Russia is actually opposed by the entire NATO system, the politician stressed.
He recalled that exactly 15 years ago, Moscow had already rebuffed the aggressor, responding to the “vile attack” on Tskhinval. Medvedev noted that in five days the Russian military “punished the brazen nationalists quickly and severely” by protecting people in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia attacked the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinval in order to take control of the self-proclaimed republic. Russia provided support to South Ossetia and Abkhazia. On August 8, Medvedev, who at that time served as president of Russia, announced the start of a peacekeeping mission in South Ossetia and the transfer of Russian forces to the conflict zone.
On August 12, the head of state announced the completion of the “operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace.” At that time, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili accused Russia of occupying the territories of the republics and announced his withdrawal from the CIS. On August 26 of the same year, Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
