Medvedev reminded detainees on suspicion of attempted assassination of Prilepin about accidents in prison

Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said that the perpetrators of the terrorist attack against the writer and ex-deputy Zakhar Prilepin could be sentenced to life imprisonment, but even under these conditions, “accidents and accidents” can happen to them in places of detention.

“Under the criminal law, they, like other criminals, will be tried for a terrorist attack and sentenced to long terms of imprisonment. But it is important that they and others like them realize a simple thing – even with those sentenced to life imprisonment (under the conditions of a moratorium on the death penalty), incidents and accidents sometimes happen,” Mr. Medvedev noted in his Telegram channel. According to him, in such a case, “the long term of punishment is quickly interrupted for natural reasons in connection with the death of the prisoner.”

He also thanked the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, who promptly uncovered the attempt on Zakhar Prilepin.

Former head of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council Andrei Klishas declaredthat the return of the death penalty in Russia will be possible only if a new Constitution is adopted. Dmitry Medvedev, A Just Russia leader Sergei Mironov and a number of other political figures made proposals to think about returning to the death penalty and its imposition.

Mr Medvedev, in particular, saidthat the death penalty can be returned, “for example, if the public danger of the gravest crimes in the country rolls over, murders first of all, or in wartime, as it happened before.” According to him, the Constitution does not need to be changed for this, but it is necessary that “the very legal positions of the Constitutional Court on the issue of the death penalty should be changed.”
