Medvedev considers nuclear arsenal to be the best guarantee of Russia’s preservation

The best guarantee of Russia’s preservation is its nuclear arsenal, believes Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of the Russian Security Council. He wrote about this in his Telegram channel in a publication dedicated to the funeral of the President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev and an assessment of his activities.

“By the way, for all the difference in assessments of the behavior of the top leadership of the USSR and Russia at that time, it should be noted that they were smart enough not to let the giant nuclear arsenal of the Union be torn apart by the newly formed national apartments. … The entire strategic nuclear arsenal then remained in our country. And it is supported by us at a very high level. And this is the best guarantee of the preservation of Great Russia,” Medvedev wrote.

He noted that if nuclear weapons were distributed among the states formed after the collapse of the USSR, “the consequences could be quick and disastrous for our small earthly world.”

At the end of August, Dmitry Medvedev in an interview with the French TV channel LCI listed four reasons for the use of nuclear weapons by Russia. These conditions are set out in paragraph 19 of the document “Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence”.

“The launch of nuclear missiles, the use of nuclear weapons, strikes against critical infrastructure that controls nuclear weapons, or other actions that threaten the existence of the state itself. So far, no such actions have been observed, ”the politician listed.

The deputy chairman of the Security Council added that Russia has never used tactical nuclear weapons or weapons with depleted uranium, unlike NATO member countries. Such states, according to him, over the past 20-30 years have “actively used it both in Yugoslavia and Iraq.”

UN Secretary General António Guterres has repeatedly stated the risk of unleashing a nuclear war. According to him, now the danger has reached unprecedented proportions since the height of the Cold War. He noted that humanity is only “one miscalculation” from a nuclear conflict. The UN Secretary General also called for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the risks of nuclear war are “very significant”, but the countries of the “nuclear five” adhere to the position of the inadmissibility of the use of nuclear weapons. However, in August, Deputy Head of the Russian delegation Andrei Belousov at the review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons admittedthat in the future, NATO countries may use nuclear weapons under the pretext of “threats to their own vital interests or those of their allies.”
