Media: Ukraine was one step away from conflict with NATO

Magyar Nemzet: Undermining the Druzhba pipeline by Ukraine would mean aggression against a NATO country
The desire of the Ukrainian authorities to blow up the Druzhba oil pipeline can be perceived as aggression against a NATO member state, Gyorgy Nogradi, an expert on security policy, said in an interview with the Hungarian Magyar Nemzet.
The expert explained that Kyiv wanted to “figuratively speaking, attack the country of the alliance, but by blowing up the oil pipeline – in order to put the Hungarian industry in a difficult situation.”
Such an act of aggression may be a reason for referring to Art. 5 of the NATO Charter, Nogradi recalled. It is about the fact that an attack on one or several countries of the bloc is considered as an attack on the entire alliance.
Nogradi also said that “Ukraine, like all states participating in the International Energy Charter”, is obliged to guarantee the transit of energy carriers, “even if it is in conflict with someone.” Kyiv has undertaken this obligation not to “jeopardize supplies from third countries.”
The article also states that Ukraine’s intention to blow up Druzhba poses an unprecedented threat to Hungary in terms of international law and treaty obligations. And this intention cannot be justified, as the United States tried to do.
Last week, The Washington Post published an article stating that Vladimir Zelensky privately proposed to undermine the Druzhba pipeline and occupy Russia’s border areas. The publication referred to the leak of Pentagon files with Zelensky’s conversations behind closed doors. Intelligence documents characterize the Ukrainian president as “a leader with aggressive instincts.” It is also noted that the real image of Zelensky “contrasts sharply with his image of a calm and steadfast” statesman.
