The European Union may present the 12th package of sanctions against Russia in the first half of October. They plan to include permission to use the frozen assets of the Bank of Russia to support Ukraine, reported Bloomberg agency.
Poland, the Baltic countries and a number of other EU states also insist on introducing additional restrictions against LNG from the Russian Federation and the services of Russian IT specialists, the publication’s sources familiar with the situation added. It was proposed to introduce restrictions in relation to the nuclear sector, but the majority of EU members opposed this initiative.
Poland is also calling on the EU to strengthen some of the sanctions from previous packages of anti-Russian restrictions. The country has called for a reduction in import quotas for polymers and steel. Warsaw also demanded the announcement of new sanctions against Belarus, the agency added.
Since the start of the special operation, the EU has already introduced 11 packages of sanctions against Russia in addition to the existing restrictions. Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the government on September 18, said that Russia had coped with Western sanctions pressure, as its economy had recovered after contracting in 2022. The President called the current economic situation in the country stable and balanced.
