The European Union plans not to extend sanctions against three Russian entrepreneurs, writes Reuters cited two diplomatic sources.
We are talking about businessmen Grigory Berezkin and Farkhad Akhmedov, as well as former Ozon CEO Alexander Shulgin. Sanctions against them expire this week, the agency clarifies.
On September 6, the European Court of General Jurisdiction, based in Luxembourg, decided lift the sanctions imposed on Shulgin in April 2022. The restrictions will continue to apply until the deadline for filing an appeal or until the end of its consideration.
At the time of the imposition of sanctions, the entrepreneur held the position of CEO of Ozon. On April 11, Shulgin left his post and resigned from the company’s board of directors.
In court, Shulgin’s main claim, which ultimately played a decisive role, was the statement about the erroneous justification for adding the businessman to the sanctions list. The EU document states that Shulgin is a “leading businessman”, but since he is no longer CEO of Ozon, Shulgin disputed this position. The EU Council has not provided any evidence why this statement is correct in relation to the former CEO of Ozon.
At the end of June, the EU introduced the 11th package of sanctions against Russia, which then subjected 87 organizations, as well as 100 individuals and a number of media outlets, to restrictions. In total, about 1,800 people and organizations are under EU sanctions. In July, EU permanent representatives agreed extension of personal sanctions.
