Media: Orkney is considering secession from the UK
[ad_1]
The Daily Telegraph newspaper reports on discussions that are taking place in the Orkney Islands in Scotland on the possible withdrawal of the archipelago from the UK and its reunification with Norway.
Recently, there have been questions at the local level about “alternative forms of government”, which include the restoration of the historical ties of the islands. According to the head of the local council, James Stokan, many Orkneys are dissatisfied with the actions of the governments in Edinburgh and London and believe that funding from the Scottish and general British budgets is insufficient.
The main hurdles that residents face are problems with the ferry service between the archipelago and the Scottish mainland. Compared to Shetland or the Outer Hebrides, Orkney receives less funding per capita. This causes indignation and a desire to change the current status. The head of the council does not exclude the possibility that, after discussions, the Orkney Islands may demand to secede from Scotland and receive the status of crown lands, like the Channel Islands in the English Channel, or the status of an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, like the Falkland Islands.
