Media: Mike Pence has applied for participation in the presidential elections in the United States

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has filed with the Federal Election Commission to run for the 2024 Republican presidential race, reported Reuters agency.
The 63-year-old former congressman and governor of Indiana will begin his campaign with a video and speech on Wednesday in Iowa, according to the agency. As recalled by Reuters, Pence was a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump in the past, but did not support him when he claimed the 2020 election was rigged. Pence also criticized Trump for the riots and attack on the Capitol in January 2021.
The growing number of candidates for the Republican nomination worries Trump’s opponents, the agency notes. They fear that the division of votes will lead to the victory of the ex-president in the primaries.
On May 25, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida also announced his participation in the presidential race. DeSantis will become the main rival of Trump, who announced his nomination for the presidency back in November 2022. While the ex-president is more than twice as popular as the governor of Florida, wrote “Vedomosti”.
On April 25, current US President Joe Biden announced his participation in the elections. In the video, he vowed to “defend democracy” and oppose “MAGA extremists” (an acronym for former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” political slogan). The current US Vice President Kamala Harris also announced her readiness to participate in the election race in the Biden team.
