According to the Associated Press, citing a source in the White House, US President Joe Biden intends to cut a large-scale oil project in Alaska.
An official statement from a member of the presidential administration is expected shortly, presenting two parts of the new plan. Under the first part of the plan, Joe Biden would ban oil drilling in 3 million acres of the Arctic Ocean, shutting off the rest of the federal waters to oil exploration. As part of the second part, the administration will develop new rules for oil production in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska, covering more than 13 million acres.
Earlier it was reported that ConocoPhillips was allowed to begin oil production at the Willow field, in northwest Alaska, which caused discontent among environmental activists who believe that this will lead to the release of 280 million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and exacerbate the climate catastrophe. However, under the administration’s new plans, the scale of the project will be limited.
