According to Vedomosti, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is going to visit Moscow in mid-March. The purpose of the visit of the Syrian leader, as specified, is to receive financial and energy assistance from the Russian leadership.
According to experts, the need for such assistance arose in Syria against the backdrop of rising prices for oil products supplied from Iran, as well as in connection with the consequences of the February earthquakes.
Bashar al-Assad’s previous visit to Moscow took place in September 2021. Since then, however, the economic situation in Syria has deteriorated significantly. The lack of fuel has led to problems in various sectors of the economy, and according to the UN, 90% of the Syrian population is in need of humanitarian assistance. The country’s authorities, in turn, accuse Western countries of imposing economic sanctions that contribute to the worsening of the crisis in Syria.
