A French court signed an arrest warrant for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is accused of using chemical weapons in 2013. Information about this appeared on the website of the human rights organization Civil Rights Defenders.

So far, four arrest warrants have been issued. In addition to Assad, charges have been brought against his brother, commander of the Syrian Republican Guard Maher Assad. The court also signed an arrest warrant for General Ghassan Abbas and General Bassam al-Hassan.

“The arrest warrants follow a criminal investigation into two chemical weapons attacks in Douma and the Eastern Ghouta region in August 2013 that killed more than 1,000 people,” Civil Rights Defenders said.

In 2022 Vedomosti wrotethat the EU has extended sanctions imposed in 2018 for the use of chemical weapons. The restrictions included the Syrian Scientific Research Center (SSRC) and several citizens associated with the government of the republic.

In October 2023, the EU Council extended sanctions regime against the proliferation and use of chemical weapons for another three years until October 16, 2026.
