Mavi Garcia wins the Classic Lorient

The Spanish champion Mavi Garcia (UAE) won the Classic Lorient on Saturday (ex-Grand Prix de Plouay dames) after having done everything in the last kilometers to blast a group of ten breakaways.
The 38-year-old runner won ahead of the Dutch Amber Kraak (Jumbo-Visma) and the Australian Grace Brown (FDJ) after a 159 km course in the Breton countryside around Plouay (Morbihan).
With Kraak, Garcia caused a break in the peloton on a climb a little less than 40 km from the finish, setting off in pursuit of his compatriot Sara Martin, a solo breakaway resumed a few kilometers further.
While the leading group still had about fifteen riders 10 km from the finish, Garcia took advantage of each climb to try to outrun his opponents.
They were still 9 to 1.5 km from the finish when Garcia launched her last offensive, but only Kraak followed her: looking at each other too much, the best sprinters got trapped.
“I did not expect such a final”commented Garcia. “I tried on the last hills because that’s where I was best. But I couldn’t let go of them. So I tried again in the finale and I found myself alone with (Kraak). I’m not a sprinter but she wasn’t either..
“I’m delighted, this is my first victory in a World Tour race”, she added with a big smile.
