Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin, in a conversation with the SHOT telegram channel, said that in 2024 Russia will focus on holding alternative competitions to the Olympics, for which athletes will receive substantial prize money, like at the Games in Paris.
As Matytsin noted, next year the BRICS Games, the Friendship Games, as well as the Winter Spartakiad and the Children of Asia Games will be held in the Russian Federation. He emphasized that all this will allow Russia to remain in the system of international sports. The minister pointed out that participation in the Olympic Games is not an end in itself, especially given the discriminatory decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that athletes from Russia who were allowed to participate in the games did not have a flag and anthem.
Matytsin added that at the Friendship Games athletes will receive “serious prize money,” the level of which will be comparable to the awards for the winners and medalists of the Olympics.
