Matviyenko handed over a written message from Putin to the President of Brazil

Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said that she had handed over a written message from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. About it writes “RIA News”.

“I conveyed a written message from the President of the Russian Federation to the deeply respected President of Brazil and also confirmed that we are waiting for him in Moscow as soon as his schedule allows,” Matvienko is quoted as saying.

On January 1, the inauguration of the president took place in Brasilia, who won the elections in the second round in October. As informed the press service of the Federation Council, Matvienko arrived in Brazil on December 31 on a working visit – she represented Russia at the inauguration of Lula da Silva. Together with the speaker, the delegation included Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Chief of Staff Gennady Golov.

According to RIA Novosti, on the eve of the President of Brazil held meetings with the heads of delegations of Russia and Ukraine. On December 31, Matviyenko also held a number of meetings, including with the Vice President of Cuba, Salvador Valdez Mesa, and the Chairman of the Assembly of Mozambique, Experanse Bias.

31 October Supreme Electoral Court of Brazil informedthat the former president of the country (2003-2010), a candidate from the socialist Workers’ Party, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, following the results of the second round of voting, became the new president of Brazil, defeating the incumbent head of state, Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula da Silva was already the head of the Brazilian state from 2003 to 2010. During this period, large-scale socio-economic programs against poverty and hunger were implemented in the country. In particular, according to the World Bank, the poverty rate in the country has almost halved, from 41.7% to 24%.

In 2016, Lula da Silva became a defendant in a trial on charges of corruption and money laundering. He was accused of accepting bribes from construction companies in exchange for helping them win contracts with state-owned oil company Petrobras. In July 2017, he was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years and one month in prison and banned from public office for 19 years. In March 2021, the court annulled all proceedings against Lula da Silva in connection with the identification of procedural violations.
