Matvienko called for support for grandparents helping to raise their grandchildren

Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko proposed developing and implementing measures to support grandparents raising their grandchildren. The speaker of the upper house of parliament believes that this will improve the demographic situation in the country.

As part of parliamentary hearings on family policy and issues of fertility support, Matvienko noted that the participation of grandparents in raising grandchildren is a Russian tradition, and there is no such thing in the West.

“We need to think about measures to support them, some kind of status. Then young parents will not be afraid to give birth, knowing that they have such support and support,” said the Chairman of the Federation Council.

She also added that emphasis should be placed on supporting families “with high fertility potential.” She included men and women aged 30-40 years, including families with children.

“This category of citizens is now at a historical maximum,” concluded Valentina Matvienko.

Earlier, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko called “bad practice” women’s desire to build a career while postponing having children. He noted that because of the existing belief that you first need to get an education, make a career and secure a financial base, “many problems arise: infertility, miscarriage, IVF.”
