Mating drummer fish blamed for noise in Tampa

Residents of the large American city of Tampa began to hear rhythmic sounds from mid-January 2024, which, according to them, resembled the bass from music speakers. Marine biologist James Locascio suggested that the source of the noise was not construction work or a party, but bearded dark croakers, also called drummer fish.

Loud, rhythmic sounds, which under certain conditions can be transmitted through the ground or underground communications, are made by drummer fish during mating, reports washingtonpost.com.

The population of dusky croakers in Tampa Bay has increased significantly, Locascio said.
