Farmers brought heavy equipment – tractors, combines and other machines – onto the roads of Bulgaria, seeking a ban on the import of Ukrainian products. Due to mass protests by agricultural producers, road traffic was blocked at 47 points in different regions of Bulgaria, including at a number of border crossings. A large-scale event is planned for September 19 in Sofia.
Chairman of the Bulgarian Farmers’ Union Georgiy Stoyanov asked for forgiveness from citizens, warning about the need to postpone their trips on September 18 and 19. In total, representatives of 26 public agricultural organizations are participating in the protests.
On September 14, the Bulgarian parliament allowed the import of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine. Local farmers considered this a “betrayal of national interests,” announcing their intention to block border crossings and key routes.
