Man goes blind from taking Viagra

Experts from Iran’s Tehran Medical University documented a case of vision loss in a 32-year-old man after taking Viagra. This was reported in the Journal of Medical Case Reports.
The patient took a 100 mg dose of sildenafil, which is the maximum recommended dose for a drug intended to treat erectile dysfunction. This dose is twice the norm. Three hours after taking it, the man suddenly lost his vision.
The test revealed blood clots had formed in the artery and vein that supplied blood to his right eye. This caused swelling of the retina. Despite efforts to restore his vision, the damage was too severe and doctors were unable to restore normal eye function. According to their findings, fluid accumulation and increased pressure ultimately led to retinal detachment.
Analysis of the medical history also showed that the patient had no family history of any diseases that could explain the sudden formation of blood clots. The study authors acknowledge that the exact mechanism by which sildenafil may damage blood vessels in the eye remains unclear.
One hypothesis is the possibility that the supposed increase in blood flow to the penis caused by the drug may inadvertently damage sensitive blood vessels in the eye through a similar mechanism. However, more research is needed to obtain more accurate results.
