Malicious mobile apps steal personal data of Facebook users

About 1 million Facebook users could unwittingly provide access to their personal data. This was reported by Meta*.
Meta*’s security team has discovered more than 400 mobile apps that have been used to steal personal information from Facebook users. Most of the applications – 355 – were developed for Android, 47 more could be installed on the iPhone.
These applications offered to log in through Facebook by entering the username and password used to enter the social network. After entering this data, the attackers stole it and could use it for their own purposes – for example, send messages to the user’s friends with a request to transfer money.
The company said in a statement that most malicious applications are disguised as photo editors that allow you to add various images to photos or transform them using unusual filters. In addition, some mobile games, fitness tracks, business apps, VPNs, and utilities to improve the pre-installed functions of the smartphone received access to the user’s personal data. At the same time, most of them had a lot of positive reviews and fairly high ratings.
The company said that the detected malicious applications have already been removed from the Play Market and the App Store. However, about 1 million users could become victims of fraudsters.
For those who have already installed one of the applications on their phone, the list of which is given on the Meta* website, the company advises changing the password on Facebook and related social networks and instant messengers. Also, for added security, it is better to set up two-factor authentication and turn on notifications about attempts to log into your account.
