Airbus’ long-haul twin-engine aircraft are still flying at altitude. Malaysia Airlines announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement to acquire 20 Airbus A330-900neos to replace its aging fleet of A330 wide-body aircraft, in a deal also involving Irish aircraft leasing company Avolon.
The public airline will buy ten of these planes from Airbus under a “sale and lease back” agreement, the ten others being leased directly to Avolon, said the Malaysian company. The planes, which will be equipped with recent Rolls-Royce engines, should be delivered between the third quarter of 2024 and 2028, said the Malaysian airline.
Recovery in demand for widebody aircraft
Modernization of the Malaysia Airlines fleet, which includes purchase rights for a further 20 A330neos, comes amid signs of a recovery in demand for wide-body aircraft after a long slump. Currently, the company operates a total fleet of 97 aircraft, short and long range.
“The A330neo will not only modernize our fleet and improve operational efficiency, but also meet environmental objectives by reducing fuel consumption per seat, while keeping passenger safety and comfort at the forefront. said Izham Ismail, chief executive of Malaysia Airlines, in a statement.
Launched in 2014 with first deliveries in 2018, the A330neo incorporates new engines and new wings, which allows it to save 14% in fuel compared to the initial version of the A330, the twin of the four-engine A340. The airline also cooperates with Airbus in areas such as sustainable fuel, training, maintenance and airspace management.
