Macron spoke out against sanctions against Azerbaijan

The introduction of sanctions against Azerbaijan will be counterproductive, said French President Emmanuel Macron.
“I don’t think now is the time for sanctions because they will be counterproductive. They will not allow for the best protection of the territory and population of Armenia,” he said (quote via Interfax).
He noted that now is the time “for demandingness, clarity, commitment, including support, including military support, which France has chosen and provides, but not for sanctions.” At the same time, Macron believes that pressure on Baku “must continue.”
On September 19, Azerbaijan began military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh. The next day, Karabakh authorities announced the conclusion of agreements on a complete ceasefire. After negotiations, the authorities of the unrecognized republic agreed to surrender their weapons under the control of Russian peacekeepers.
On September 28, the president of the unrecognized republic, Samvel Shahramanyan, signed a decree on the termination of its existence from 2024 and the dissolution of all state institutions and organizations.
Since the beginning of hostilities, more than 100,000 Armenians have left Karabakh. European Parliament 6 October voted for a resolution where he compared the situation in the region to ethnic cleansing and called for sanctions against Baku. The parliament called Azerbaijan’s actions “pre-planned and unjustified” and called for a review of relations with the republic.
The European Union betrayed Armenia, stated at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Official representative of the department Maria Zakharova noted that the EU does not provide “any stability or de-escalation” in Armenia, but is engaged in “intelligence monitoring in the interests of Brussels” and provoking the situation.
