The Russian station “Luna-25” entered the circumlunar orbit and photographed the surface of the Earth’s satellite. In the picture published by the state corporation “Roskosmos”, the Zeeman crater, invisible from Earth, is captured. This is the south polar crater on the far side of the moon.
According to Roskosmos, the world’s first image of the far side of the moon was obtained in October 1959 by the Soviet automatic station Luna-3.
On August 11, from the Vostochny cosmodrome, for the first time in almost 50 years, launched Russian lunar station “Luna-25”. The station should land in the southern polar region of the moon. Landing is scheduled for August 21st. The term of the “Luna-25” is a year.
This is the first expedition to the lunar pole, the Soviet lunar stations landed at the equator. The previous mission, Luna 24, was sent in 1976 and delivered 170 g of lunar soil to earth. Roscosmos is going to launch Luna-26 in 2027, and Luna-27 in 2028. The main task of “Luna-25” will be the development of soft landing technology. The mission could be the first spacecraft to land on the Moon’s South Pole.
