Presidents of Russia and Belarus Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko agreed that the introduction of a single currency is not a matter of “today.” This was announced by Lukashenka during a meeting with the Chairman of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina, writes BelTA.
“There are no questions about the fact that the Interbank Currency Council (of the Central Bank of Russia and the National Bank of Belarus. – ed.) is working for us. I often quote you, our chairman, at the level of heads of state, when it comes to creating a single currency and so on, that this is not an easy process. And probably not today, as we agreed with the President of Russia,” he said.
Lukashenka also noted that “some patriotic people in Russia and Belarus often raise this issue.” In this regard, he noted that he would like to hear Nabiullina’s opinion on this matter.
In 2021 Putin and Lukashenko agreed all programs of integration of Russia and Belarus. Then they also said that the introduction of a single currency is not on the agenda. In particular, Lukashenka then noted that there would be no single currency in the Union State, since, on the recommendation of the Bank of Russia and the National Bank of Belarus, this issue was postponed due to the countries’ unpreparedness for such a step. According to Putin, in order to raise the issue of a common currency, it is first necessary to bring together the macroeconomic policies of the Central Bank and the Bank of Belarus, which is mentioned, among other things, in the agreed union programs.
