The renowned Small Stage of the theater presents the first premiere of the anniversary season, which has already started celebrating its 100th anniversary on the Main Stage and the Stage on Sretenka.
In the creative heritage of Turgenev, the story “Faust” is not as popular in the theater as his famous plays. The director creatively expanded the horizon of Turgenev’s narration, adding material from famous works about Faust – Goethe and Pushkin to the main plot, turning the love story into a kind of mystery act in which Turgenev’s characters take part.
The main character Pavel Alexandrovich (Oleg Rebrov) introduces the audience to the story of his love for Vera Nikolaevna, whom he meets after a nine-year separation. He is struck by her youthful appearance, although she became a married lady who gave birth to three children, two of whom she lost. Yulia Solomatina perfectly embodies his perception of her as some kind of beautiful doll that he wants to disenchant: “It’s nice to unfreeze some soul.” As his assistant, he takes a book that, even in his youth, had a tremendous influence on him – Goethe’s Faust. In the performance, the narrator himself becomes Faust, and the family’s guest, the neighbor’s governess, the German Schimmel (Evgeny Matveev), becomes Mephistophile. Vera’s long-dead mother, Madame Eltsova (Tatyana Rogozina), also comes to life, whose image appears on the stage at the key moments of the story, because it was she who inspired her daughter that she should not read books.
The theatrical language is trying to decipher those complex conflicts between the relationship of two people in love: these are the extended dialogues of Faust and Mephistopheles, and the plastic exercises of the participants in the story, for example, in the scene of particular importance for Turgenev, when the characters fall into a storm on the river. Anastasia Mishina plays a governess in the Priimkovs’ house, and she becomes almost the same important character in this unusual story. These characters wedged into the romantic relationships of the heroes, as if predicting the tragic ending of the story, as was the case with Goethe. Having not read a single book at the request of her adventurous mother, Vera was shocked by that fantastically wonderful world of brilliant literature that had passed by her 28 years, that her soul and body could no longer live, remain in reality …
The director says: “The power of imagination is the driving force behind both Fausts, both Turgenev’s and Goethe’s original. And in this I see the possibility of a theatrical language. Imagination, on the one hand, recklessly drives human development and perception of the world, on the other hand, it easily turns us into excessive reflection and, as a result, depression. The inability of a person to curb his fantasies about anything, to overcome the destructive power of imagination is the zone of vibration of our performance. Mephistopheles is not an abstract devil with horns and hooves, but a very concrete part of yourself that can rebel, jump off the wheels and take you to the heights beyond.
Fans of this famous theater-anniversary received an unexpected gift, which touched upon such lofty matters of human existence that one wants to escape from modern reality for at least two hours and return to the distant world of romantic Turgenev’s heroes and touching Turgenev’s girls…
